The program addresses malnutrition by piloting a coordinated multi-stakeholder approach of the four UN agencies UNICEF, WHO, WFP and FAO together with the two Governments of Rwanda and Burundi. The activities will take place in two districts of Rwanda (Nyamagabe and Rutsiro) and one province of Burundi (Ngozi) where food insecurity and poverty are at highest level. The focus is on the reduction of chronic malnutrition of children under five and pregnant and lactating mothers.

Nonostante la crisi politica e umanitaria, in Burundi la DSC porta avanti il suo impegno a favore della popolazione. Nel settore della sanità mira a potenziare le capacità dei centri sanitari e degli ospedali distrettuali affinché possano dispensare cure accessibili a tutti e di qualità. Il programma della DSC copre simultaneamente il Burundi e il Ruanda.

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence.

Continuing clashes between Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the March 23 Movement (M23) in North Kivu Province in eastern DRC is causing immense human suffering. Further military confrontations will have heavy consequences for civilians. Humanitarian agencies continue to provide aid in areas where they have access.

Great Lakes Region: Agriculture productivity, income generation and food security

The program will promote a stronger and more productive agricultural sector that can contribute significantly to a reduction of food insecurity in the region. It emphasizes a market driven approach while at the same time paying attention to farmers with more limited access to markets. Four elements will be addressed: creation of local agribusinesses, sustainable intensification of smallholder production, market development and value addition, and innovation for enabling policy and business climate.

Dal 2012 la DSC ha dedicato un programma specifico ai giovani ruandesi. Incrementando la qualità di molte scuole professionali nel Paese, intende fornire ai giovani la miglior formazione possibile affinché possano soddisfare le esigenze dell'economia del Ruanda che, per potersi sviluppare, deve diversificarsi. L'intervento della DSC contribuisce inoltre a migliorare l'integrazione professionale delle persone più svantaggiate.
