Switzerland and Jordan Cooperate in the field of Improving Quality of Construction to increase Resilience against Natural Hazards

Press releases, 08.11.2016

As part of their ongoing cooperation since 2008, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Jordan Engineers Association (JEA) launch two manuals for construction supervision. The two Manuals will be the first documented and comprehensive tools for supervision Engineers.

Under the patronage of the Minister of Public Work and Housing, Engineer Sami Halaseh, and the Ambassador of Switzerland Hans-Peter Lenz, SDC and JEA celebrated today the launching of two manuals on construction supervision and Rapid Structural Assessment Tool for buildings after disasters.

The first Manual is an essential guideline for supervision engineers to support their work in managing the quality of buildings throughout the construction process. While the second one is a Rapid Structural Assessment tool, to introduce engineers to the latest rapid assessment tools which will help them doing a proper assessment, and a better technical repair for buildings.

Several workshops and training courses will follow the launching to guarantee the best use of these Manuals. Additionally, a total of 200 steel fixers will be trained in cooperation with JEA, the Contractors Association and the Vocational Training Corporation on steel reinforcement detailing.

The launching of the manuals is a result of the JEA and the SDC efforts in cooperation with their partners; the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and the International Advisory Engineering office. The manuals will positively reflect on the level of competitiveness and quality of the construction in Jordan.

The first cooperation between SDC and JEA started in 2008 through the implementation of different phases of a project aiming to improve the quality of construction in Jordan and increase buildings resilience against earthquakes and natural risks.

Switzerland is supporting Jordan with an overall contribution of over of 20 million JOD in 2016. One of its important interventions is to support the kingdom to deal with the impacts of the Syrian crisis.
