Local news, 11.03.2022

A consignment of more than 20 tonnes of humanitarian aid has arrived from Switzerland to support Moldova in managing the refugee crisis. The consignment contains cold-weather tents, heaters, blankets and cooking equipment.

The donation ceremony took place today in the presence of Minister of Labour and Social Protection Marcel Spatari and the Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Moldova Caroline Tissot.

"We thank the Government of Switzerland for its assistance during this difficult period. These products are indeed much needed for the temporary accommodation centres where refugees are housed. So far 93 centres have been authorised by the National Social Assistance Agency. At the same time, several families have offered shelter to refugees, and they too will need support. We appreciate the good cooperation and solidarity shown by our external partners," said Marcel Spatari.

For her part, the director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in the Republic of Moldova, Caroline Tissot, said.

"I was very impressed by the way Moldovans and the authorities here have responded to the refugee crisis. Switzerland is and will continue to stand by Moldova in the coming period. A team of seven Swiss specialists is in the Republic of Moldova to assess the assistance needs of refugees on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and to determine how we can help further. We are in close cooperation with all the authorities involved in managing the crisis".

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection is working with the Swiss Cooperation Office on the project "Migration and Local Development", which aims to involve the diaspora in local development. Also, with the financial support of Switzerland, the information system and several offices of the National Employment Agency have been upgraded.
