The Green Gold Animal Health Project – after 17 years having the closure event on September 10, 2021

In 1999/2000, Switzerland, though the Swiss Agency for Development and CooperationSDC started its support to Mongolia with a humanitarian aid project in response to heavy dzud. In 2004, this humanitarian initiativewas followed up by long-term development cooperation through the Green Gold Animal Health Project, with the aim to contribute improved livelihoods of herder households through sustainable rangeland management, better marketing, and a conducive legal and policy environment.

Seventeen years have passed since then. By end of September 2021, this project reached the end of his project cycle. But through itslegacies, results and lessons learned new roads have be paved for promising development opportunities established in cooperation with our national partners, personnel, leaders, herder households, and their collective organizations. The last 17 years have been a journey of countless experiences, good and challenging, and for the shared value of creating a better future for the children and youth in Mongolia, all partner involved in the project in the one or other way and together proceeded with the spirit of adaptation and innovation. With the time, the project grew into a large-scale project that reached out to over 90,000 herders across Mongolia.

In addition to sharing good agricultural practices, and practices in delivering final products to consumers, local and international researchers have presented the latest research on pastureland recovery. 

In his remarks at the GGAHP closing event, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Z.Mendsaikhan stressed the significance of the project, which has made valuable contributions to the livelihoods of herder households and the environment, while underscoring that more than 20 million hectares of pastureland across the country has been kept in healthy conditions and rehabilitated as a result of concluding agreements with pasture user groups to collectively use pastures without degrading them.

The closing event was attended by Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Z.Mendsaikhan, Member of the State Great Khural G.Temuulen,Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Mongolia Bernardino Regazzoni, Head of Swiss Cooperation in Mongolia Stefanie Burri, as well as herders, livestock specialists, pasture users, and suppliers of livestock raw materials.

This shows what capacity herders can reach, if they join hands for their future. As Ambassador of Switzerland to Mongolia, I feel proud of the achievements our partnership has produced. Our engagement made the difference, to a real added value for the herder families, their children and for the whole country. ” highlighted Ambassador in his speech.
