
Ambassador Frieden was born in Lugano, Ticino in 1953 and holds a PhD in economics from the University of Freiburg. After field research in Mexico and work in the private sector, in 1986 he joined the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) as a scientific collaborator. In 2003, Ambassador Frieden served as the Country Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC in Kathmandu, Nepal until 2007. After that Ambassador Frieden became the advisor and representative of H.E. Mrs. Calmy Rey, President of Switzerland, in the UN Commission on Sustainable Development untill March 2011. Before taking up this assignment, Ambassador Frieden was the Executive Director for the World Bank (IBRD) in Washington.
