The World Bank and the IMF had urged the G20 countries to suspend temporarily debt-service payments of 73 developing countries affected by COVID. While recognizing this Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI), Switzerland as a bilateral creditor to Pakistan had also extended debt relief to Pakistan by signing three agreements concerning the extension of the DSSI.

Being the Patron-in-Chief, the Ambassador chaired the 164^th meeting, marked with his farewell, of the Executive Committee of the Swiss Business Council, which is housing more than 50 companies representing Switzerland in Pakistan.

Mr. Bénédict de Cerjat, hosted an address by the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr. Reza Baqir, on "the Economy of Pakistan" at his residence on 3 February 2022. In his opening remarks, Ambassador de Cerjat highlighted the importance of Swiss investments in Pakistan and praised the Swiss Business Council in Pakistan for its active support to more than 50 member companies. He termed the increased autonomy of SBP and the revival of the IMF programme as positive developments and listed inflation, low economic growth, current account deficit and balance of payment as the key challenges.

Ambassador Bénédict de Cerjat, visited Karachi from 19 to 22 January 2021. The Ambassador paid homage to the founder of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah at his mausoleum. He met the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr. Reza Baqir and visited the state-of-the-art State Bank Museum. Being the Patron-in-Chief of the Swiss Business Council (SBC), which was established in 2008 in Karachi and unites 53 companies operating in Pakistan either as a local subsidiary or a partner of a Swiss company, the Ambassador attended its Managing Committee Meeting.

During his meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Ambassador stressed on the expansion of trade between Switzerland and Pakistan and said that Pakistan can import the excellent textile machinery from Switzerland to improve the quality of product leading to more exports and value addition. The Ambassador also visited the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) where Mr. Abdul Aleem, Chief Executive and Secretary General of the OCCI, gave a comprehensive presentation on the role of the OICCI in promoting foreign direct investment in the country and safeguarding the business interests of its member companies. During the trip, the Ambassador visited the newly acquired manufacturing facility of Novartis Pakistan, which will soon start producing medicines at this site. He concluded his trip by visiting the manufacturing site of SICPA Inks Pakistan (Pvt) Limited, another local subsidiary of a Swiss company.

Mr. Bénédict de Cerjat visited the mausoleum of Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah to pay his homage to the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. During the visit, a formal ceremony was performed by a contingent of the Pakistan Navy where the Ambassador laid a floral wreath and penned his comments in the ‘visitors’ book’. The Ambassador also visited the interesting museum where the relics of Mr. Jinnah have been exhibited.

Pakistan has successfully concluded rescheduling agreements with 19 bilateral creditor countries to enable a lasting economic recovery.
