Municipal Solid Waste Management Project - Chiclayo Limpio


Switzerland supports the Peruvian city of Chiclayo in improving the management of the generated municipal solid waste in an integrated manner. The Project has pilot character and will serve the Ministry of Environment and other Peruvian muncipalities as a model.

Hintergrund The generation of municipal solid waste has in the course of the economic development of Peru in recent years continously risen. Despite existing institutions and regulatory frameworks, actual management of solid waste is in a critical state. Inefficient or even lack of proper waste management services increasingly hampers the economic potential of many rapidly growing cities, pollutes the environment and threatens the health of the population. Most cities, including Chiclayo, dispose collected waste on open uncontrolled dumpsites, in open channels or water courses. Burning of waste is a common practice in underserved areas.
Ziele The overall objective of the Project is to improve the management and disposal of the solid waste generated in the city of Chiclayo and the neighbouring municipalities and thus contributing to better living conditions of the local population, improving local economic development and tourism and the protecting the environment. The Project addresses the current shortcomings in an integrated manner through investements in street cleaning and waste collection equipment and infrastructure, technical assistance to improve waste management effetiveness and efficiency, raising public awareness, formalizing the informal sector, safe disposal in a sanitary landfill and restoration of the uncontrolled dumpsite. The Project has pilot character. The developed tools and practices will be made available to the partnering Ministry of Environment and shared with other municipalities in Peru.
Mittelfristige Wirkungen Significant improvement of the waste management performance (street cleaning, collection, recycling and disposal) in a financially viable manner.Safe disposal of the regionally generated municipal solid waste in sanitary landfill built and operated by a private operator. Population of Chiclayo supports the efforts of the Municipality and its solid waste management service to keep the city clean. Improved health and working conditions of the informal sector (waste pickers) in the area of influence.Gained experiences and developed new tools and practices to render the solid waste management system more effective and efficient documented and made available to the the Ministry of Environment and other Peruvian municipalities.
