Background The humanitarian situation in Sudan has steadily worsened since conflict erupted across  the country  in April 2023. While hunger was already on the rise, the ongoing fighting has escalated the magnitude and extreme severity of food insecurity. More than half of the population are facing acute hunger and 755 k  people have been classified as living in IPC Phase 5. In Zamzam Camp in North Darfur, the first famine anywhere in the world since 2017 has been confirmed. In order to address both the manifestation and the root causes of food insecurity, close collaboration between humanitarian and development  actors is paramount.
Objectives Strengthen food and nutrition security of 23.2  m people among conflict-affected, vulnerable farming and pastoral communities in Sudan through the  provision of critical and resilience-focused agricultural lively-hood assistance.
Target groups 23.2 m individuals in the most vulnerable communities across all 18 states including IDPs, members of host communities and non-hosting individuals
Medium-term outcomes
  1. Ensure access to diversified food sources through life-saving assistance, increasing household food production and income
  2. Timely livestock support through mass vaccination campaigns against transboundary animal diseases

Expected results:

  • 12.1 m people provided with emergency agricultural assistance to improve crop production for 2025 summer and winter seasons
  • 150 k people provided with male and female breeding goats, concentrate feed and mineral lick, to improve access to milk and income

  • 10.5 m people provided with emergency  vaccination, treatment, and deworming to control epidemic and endemic animal diseases

Results from previous phases:

Despite limited funding and a challenging operating environment, between January and October 2024:

  • 2.6 m people across 11 states have been reached through distributing emergency crop and vegetable seeds
  • 3 m people across 11 states have received livestock, veterinary, and fisheries support

These figures pertain to FAO’s overall performance under the HNRP 2024.  Detailed results specific to Phase One and the Emergency Livelihood Response Plan will be included in FAO’s final report due by February 2025.
