Tajikistan is prone to natural hazards and the situation is aggravated by the effect of climate change. A high temperature in summer increases the risk of glacier lake outburst floods affecting peoples’ lives and the development of the country. Prevention of happening of natural hazards is impossible, however, through mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the development planning and decision making process, the vicious cycle of disasters can be reversed. In Geneva, in May 2019, Tajikistan provided its clear statement at the Global DRR Platform meeting and confirmed the Governments’ further strong commitment towards the reduction of disaster risks in the region.
Corrine Demenge, the Deputy Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan during her speech shared her challenges during the trip to the Pamirs, where she witnessed the landslide blocking the road. She noted that: “If you ask me about our experience in managing natural hazards and climate change – the first factor for success that comes to my mind is Governance. We all need adequate policy instruments and functioning institutions to manage natural disasters”.
The primary outcome of the Conference is the adoption of the Dushanbe Resolution to be presented by the Government of Tajikistan at the next European and Asian Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction and Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction.
The event is financed by the Government of Switzerland and hosted jointly by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan
