SSD IOM: Regional Information and Coordination Mechanisms for South Sudanese Displacement Dynamics

Projekt abgeschlossen

Continued conflict, food insecurity and a dire economic situation have increased the scale of displacement both within and outside the country to unprecedented levels, with many sheltering in UN POCS or crossing to neighbouring countries. For humanitarians to be able to respond to the needs of these populations, a better understanding of the displacement dynamics and trends must be developed. IOM’s proposed project will help create a better understanding of the displacement dynamics and trends and enable humanitarians to effectively respond to needs of the populations.

Hintergrund As South Sudan enters its fourth year of active conflict since December 2013; over 3 million people are displaced from their homes. Over 1.8 million are internally displaced with more than 200’000 in UNMISS Protection of Civilian sites (PoCs), while the rest are either in IDP camps or on the move for safety. Moreover there are over 1.4 million South Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries. Humanitarians find it challenging to understand population movement as there is a huge information gap and cannot therefore respond to their needs in the most effective way. IOM’s proposed project will help create a better understanding of the displacement dynamics and trends and enable humanitarians to effective respond to needs of the populations
