Hintergrund

Large and sudden intraregional migration flows became an emerging challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) that, if not properly and urgently addressed, will have detrimental mid- and long-term effects on growth, poverty reduction, social inclusion and social and political stability in the region. As the largest source of development finance in LAC, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) wants to step up its support to countries facing high influx of migrants.

The department of La Guajira in Northern Colombia has an acute water deficit, one of the most critical in the country. Rapid population growth, of which migration is an important component (in 2018 alone the department received 107’000 Venezuelan migrants), poses another crucial challenge. Municipalities in La Guajira, some of the poorest in Colombia, are already struggling to expand water and sanitation coverage to meet the needs of the local population.

Funding from SDC will help accelerating the deployment of both physical and institutional investments.

Ziele The development of solutions to address the effects of migration in countries with communities disproportionally affected by large and sudden intraregional migration inflows is accelerated.
