GWP Global Water Partnership

Three pertinent, complementary and synergic global Networks (respectively membership/core funding and contribution to specific project): (1) SDC's co-support to the Global water Partnership (GWP):, (2) Support to specific project of GWP:, (3) membership to the World Water Council (WWC):, (4) membership to the Water Footprint Network (WFN):, (5) Support to projects and small actions of WWC and WFN. Through its participation to these networks, SDC pursues four major objectives: a) Influence significantly the development of the water sector at global level and contribute to the harmonization of the different approaches. b) Communicate and disseminate SDC’s experience at global level. c) Strengthen SDC’s interventions in the water sector trough the global inputs of the networks. d) Maintain and develop a strong Swiss positioning in the water sector. These objectives contribute to the overall goal to achieve the global water security as a contribution to all major MDGs related to water, like: eradicate elimination extreme poverty and hunger (1), reduce child mortality (3), ensure environmental sustainability (7) Develop a global partnership for development (8) and assure the implementation of the Accra Agenda for Action in the Water sector. Each of SDC’s selected partners have specific corresponding goals which Switzerland shares and supports.

Hintergrund	Water related problems are more prominent than ever, and so is the need to deal with them at an appropriate level and with the right partners.
Ziele	To achieve global water security impacting on all major global challenges of sustainable development with particular focus on attaining effective global water governance.
Zielgruppen	- Broad range of players in the water sector and outside. - Water decision and policy makers.  - Generally all that suffer from water mismanagement in its various forms (water scarcity, water pollution, water misallocation).
Mittelfristige Wirkungen	1) Active shaping of global water governance and higher level of harmonisation of the different approaches. 2) Common norms for water management exist and the effectiveness of policy measures is enhanced.  3) Coherent action along the lines of the post-2015 agenda and its water related targets is being implemented. 4) Gender mainstreaming in the global water sector and throughout all levels of action is strengthened. 5) Strong Swiss positioning in the water sector is maintained and/or further developed.
Resultate	Resultate von früheren Phasen:   The key problem in the water sector is to apportion diminishing supplies between ever-increasing water demands. Traditional fragmented approaches are no longer viable; hence a holistic approach to water management is essential: the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). With its mandate to promote IWRM, Global Water Partnership (GWP) has ensured that the concept is nowadays widely accepted. GWP has not only significantly shaped the concept but contributed largely to its understanding and uptake on many different levels (local and community, basins, transboundary, national and international) through the delivery of several services and products by its network. The World Water Council (WWC) contributes to increasing awareness of global water issues and to political mobilisation through the triennial World Water Forums. The partnership with the Water Footprint Network (WFN) has led to the joint development of water footprint guidelines and tools that are widely utilised for more sustainable, fair and efficient use of fresh water resources worldwide.
