IDASA Institutions Démocratiques Alternatives SA Décentralisation

Project completed

With the support of SDC, the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA) since 2002 has been engaged in the assessment of local governance, the provision of tailor-made local capacity building support and the encouragement of policy advocacy for decentralisation. In the second phase of the project, IDASA implemented its Local Government Barometer (LGB) in few, selected local government districts of five Southern African countries i.e. Lesotho, South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania and Malawi. The overall goal of the third phase is to improve the quality of local governance in order to deepen democratic processes and improve service delivery at the local level. This will be accomplished through extensive engagements of SDC in Malawi, Botswana and the newly added Zambia, Lesotho and South Africa being financed by CIDA and EU through separate projects.
