Background

A quarter of the world’s population are children and young people. Almost 90% of them live in developing countries.

An estimated 262 million school-age children, adolescents and youths are denied access to education, an estimated 15 million adolescent girls experience forced sex and 12 million girls under 18 are married each year.

Globally, 25% of adolescents are affected by violence or armed conflict. Almost one in ten children are in child labor.

Fragile countries like Burkina Faso and Mali are among the 10 countries in the world where childhood is most threatened and the right to education is no longer protected. Likewise in Latin America, activities of armed groups are on the rise while the rule of law is eroding.

Due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, children and young people are at risk of being one of its main victims. Up to 1.6 billion children and young people have been affected by school closure, secondary health effects and increased protection risks.

The Alliance has built a rapid and context adaptive response to the COVID-19 crisis, focusing on the key aspect of its expertise.

Expected results:

TdH Suisse:

In its efforts to create a mechanism to measure the impact of awareness-raising activities, TdH Suisse worked with the University of Geneva. By the end of 2019, an inventory of existing tools and methods was drawn up and a questionnaire for observing students was developed. The questionnaire will be distributed to primary school in the canton of Geneva as part of a pilot study.

tdh schweiz:

In 2019 a video summarizing the theory of change in gender-based violence prevention and the use of psychosocial support approaches was produced. Expertise and best practice in these areas were broadly shared (e.g. thematic publications, SDC networks, public cinema events).

A PSEAH policy was adopted in 2020. Relevant management instruments for prevention and management of cases including a system of ombudspersons were introduced.
