In order to achieve their goal of enhanced cooperation in countries of origin, and to play their role as development actors, required framework conditions need to be guaranteed. Increasingly, national development agencies in countries of origin and international organizations engage diasporas directly for projects of international cooperation, based on their shared interests in harnessing the development of countries of origin. One of the key challenges is to widely link diaspora organisations so that they can strive for their development goals in a co-ordinated and more efficient manner.

The goal of this project is to improve framework conditions for Diaspora organisations; this is expected enhance the cooperation potential of the African diaspora in countries of destination for sustainable development in countries of origin. The establishment of an all-encompassing African Diaspora Platform in Europe is regarded as an essential element of such framework conditions.

Target groups

The ultimate beneficiaries of the program are African countries of origin, benefitting from the development impact through cooperation with their diasporas in Europe.

African diaspora organizations in Europe will benefit from specific strengthening of their capacities for co-operation, effectively building their potential as actors of development.

Medium-term outcomes

1. AEDP sets the ground for comprehensive platform-building activities, which are led and managed by African diaspora organizations based in Europe.

2. AEDP strengthens independent, effectively functioning diaspora organizations and fosters their cooperation

3. AEDP provides for relevant and appropriate coordination between diaspora organizations, countries of residence and countries of origin.

Results from previous phases:

A Europe-wide diaspora network was established through the facilitation of constant face-to-face expert meetings and training workshops under the lead of four major diaspora consortium partners and the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). However, activities and services were mainly separately delivered by the consortium partners, causing problems to an effective operational management of the network. Therefore, efforts are to be invested into the establishment of effectively functioning structures. Clearly defined responsibilities and a transparent communication system figure as key factors for ensuring the sustainability of the network.
