On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Federal Commission on Migration (FCM) and the Embassy of Canada to Switzerland host a panel discussion on “Women in Displacement” on 8 March 2018 from 6pm to 8pm. The event takes place within the framework of the “DISPLACED” exhibition currently on display in the Historischen Museum in Bern.

Fear is the constant companion of women in displacement. It is the fear of violence and sexual abuse, hunger and illness, losing family members and the fear of an uncertain future for their children and themselves. Many have lost their husbands to death, forced recruitment or captivity. For this reason, they are often forced to flee their homes alone, with their children or elderly relatives.
Women flee violence, slavery, forced marriage or sexual abuse, threats they often encounter again during displacement or at their final destination. However, women-specific reasons for displacement are not enshrined in the Geneva Refugee Convention. Women also flee their homes in search of work and economic perspectives, where they frequently experience exploitation and violence again. Around 30 million women and girls are currently faced with such dangers worldwide. In Switzerland, around 64 000 women have been looking for protection in the past 10 years.
Migration can also be a chance for women when it comes to education, income and independence. On the occasion of the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace, displaced women will be at the centre of our panel discussion. We will further discuss what Switzerland and the international community can do to strengthen protection and women’s rights and offer them new perspectives.
Free admission also includes access to the DISPLACED exhibition from 5pm onwards.
The panel discussion will be held in English with simultaneous translation into German and French.
