Contexto | Humanitarian shelter responses require a rapid and large mobilization of shelter and construction materials as well as essential household items/non-food items to meet lifesaving and life-supporting needs. Hence, shelter and settlements responses carry one of the highest risks of negative environmental impacts in a humanitarian response, including risks of increased deforestation or overuse of natural resources, the frequent use of plastics and of materials which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. To tackle this issue, the Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) has strengthened its focus to advance and support partners to reduce negative environmental impacts of shelter responses and also consider climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. |
Objetivos | Improving the quality and effectiveness of humanitarian assistance through the systematic integration of environmental considerations into shelter and settlement responses. |

Resultados |
Resultados previstos: Resultados de las fases anteriores: Over successive years, the GSC has been able to advance a number of initiatives to address the environmental challenges facing the sector i.e. an active Environment Community of Practice (ECOP). Since early 2022, the GSC has a three person “Green Team” dedicated to this work and this project builds on the progress made by the GSC Green Team and the ECOP over the past decade and contributes to the strategic environmental approach of the GSC. |

Coordinación con otros proyectos y actores | The GSC, either directly or through its lead agencies or its Environment Community of Practice, is involved in a range of initiatives that advance the environmental agenda in the humanitarian sector and promote and advocate for synergies between the GSC greening efforts and the activities of other partners. Synergies and coordination will be sought with these initiatives (i.e. the Joint Initiative (JI) for Sustainable Humanitarian Packaging Waste Management, Environmentally Sustainable Logistics (WREC) Project, Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (SSCA) Project). |
