Jordan ACF - Community-based WASH service provision in Azraq Camp
While water supply available for refugees in Azraq camp now meets minimum standards, ongoing concerns remains around water conservation, with informal water connections and vandalism of shared WASH resources. Over the last two years, increased water consumption which led to the erosion of water supply, weak pressure in the water network, and inequitable distribution were observed. This made empowering refugees to take accountability to promote efficient use of water and sustainable management of the WASH facilities very critical.

Contesto | In Jordan, over 132,000 Syrian refugees reside in camps, where the need for provision of critical WASH services persists, including in Azraq camp. Needs have largely been addressed in main camps through the progressive construction of water and wastewater infrastructure. The WASH sector continues to supply essential basic life-saving WASH services in Azraq camps and prospect for incremental improvements to reduce access inequity, secure water supply and reduce water losses. Nationally, Jordan continued progressing towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 6, by serving unreached areas and working toward safely managed water and sanitation facilities. |
Obiettivi | Syrian refugees women, men, boys and girls have access to improved WASH services and demonstrate optimal WASH-related behaviours. |
Gruppi target | 39,437 Syrian refugees in Azraq Refugee camp |
Effetti a medio termine |
Outcome 1: Syrian refugees have greater ownership and influence on the planning and operation of the WASH services in the camp. Outcome 2: Women, men, girls and boys have improved water conservation and hygiene practices. |

ACF is an active participant in camp coordination meetings and works closely with UNICEF, UNHCR, CARE, NRC, WVI and other humanitarian organizations to coordinate service and activities. This project is intended to complement and strengthen ACF's UNICEF-funded community mobilisation project, and UNICEF’s SDC-funded project to construct a third borehole and resolve system-driven inequities within the water distribution network. In this regard, extensive coordination between UNICEF, SDC and ACF in the planning and implementation of activities is anticipated. |
