Contesto | The protracted humanitarian crisis has aggravated the precarious conditions in which Venezuela's indigenous communities live. According to the United Nations, indigenous populations lack public services that guarantee access to food, drinking water, health or support their traditional livelihoods. Nor do they have the minimum conditions that could provide opportunities to generate economic income to meet their basic needs. In addition to this, there are problems associated with the existence of illegal mining and/or irregular groups in their territories, forcing them to live in unfavourable conditions or to abandon their lands for new settlements. As a consequence, food production using traditional techniques has also been abandoned. In 2019, the World Food Programme reported that 7.9% of the population in Venezuela (2.3 million) is severely food insecure; and the highest risk index (21%) was registered in the states of Delta Amacuro and Bolivar, which registered a weighting of 11%, i.e. in moderate food insecurity. The situation of indigenous women in Venezuela is complex; according to the 2011 indigenous census (INEC, 2011), women represent 49.5% of the total indigenous population in the country. However, they still face multiple challenges, including discrimination, poverty, lack of access to basic health, education and housing services, and gender-based violence. |
