Bern, Press releases, 26.03.2009

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslav Sikorski, was in Switzerland today for an official visit to hold talks with Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey. The day’s programme included a visit to the Polish Museum in Rapperswil.

The Foreign Minister of Poland, Radoslav Sikorski, visited Switzerland for an official visit, marking the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Switzerland. He was received in Bern this morning at the Maison de Watteville by his counterpart, Micheline Calmy-Rey. In the afternoon, the two delegations visited Schloss Rapperswil, which has housed a Polish Museum for the last 140 years.

During their encounter, Mr Sikorski and Mrs Calmy-Rey addressed bilateral relations, European affairs, aspects of international security - in particular the proposed new European security architecture, and multilateral cooperation. Policy on energy and the environment were also discussed, as were the international financial crisis and the decision of the Federal Council to apply the OECD standard on the exchange of information in fiscal matters.

An agreement on scientific cooperation between Poland and Switzerland was signed. The agreement involves programmes to promote innovation and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of research. The agreement is part of the one billion franc contribution that Switzerland has made in support of the enlargement of the European Union, of which almost half has been earmarked for Poland.
