Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer receives Slovakian Finance Minister

This afternoon, Finance Minister Ueli Maurer received his Slovakian counterpart, Peter Kažimír, in Bern. The talks focused on an exchange on the macroeconomic situation in Europe and the most important international financial and tax issues.

The exchange of views and experience between Peter Kažimír and Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer also addressed areas which are currently of immense importance in Europe, particularly Brexit, bank weakness in Europe and capital requirements in Europe against the backdrop of current discussions on the implementation of Basel III.

Slovakia holds the EU Council Presidency in this half of 2016 and thus chairs the EU's Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN). In view of the EFTA-ECOFIN ministerial meeting on 8 November, the Slovakian finance minister is currently visiting the EFTA countries. Slovakia's EU Council Presidency is focused on the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). In the area of taxes, ECOFIN is dealing with the topic of efficiency in combating fraud and tax avoidance in the European Union.
