President Amherd to represent Switzerland at fourth meeting of the European Political Community

Press releases, 15.07.2024

On Thursday, 18 July, President Viola Amherd will attend the fourth meeting of the European Political Community (EPC), which will take place at the historic Blenheim Palace in the market town of Woodstock in southern England. In addition to the UK and Switzerland, 45 states, the institutions of the European Union (EU) and other organisations will also attend the meeting.

At the opening of the meeting, Ms Amherd will present the results of the high-level conference on peace in Ukraine that took place mid-June at the Bürgenstock resort. The meeting agenda at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, will focus on approaches to defending and safeguarding democracy, as well as on the issues of energy security and migration. Ms Amherd will take part in the exchange on democracy, which will address hybrid threats and disinformation campaigns.

The meeting offers the opportunity for informal discussions at the highest level. Ms Amherd is scheduled to meet with the new Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, among others. The programme also includes a reception by King Charles III.

The EPC is a high-level forum for promoting political dialogue and cooperation on the European continent. Switzerland supports the still young format of the EPC and is actively involved. The founding meeting took place in Prague in October 2022, followed by a second meeting in Chișinău in June 2023 and a third in Granada in October 2023. In future, the meetings will continue to be held alternately in countries inside and outside the EU. Hungary will host the next meeting in the autumn.
