GEDAP III Ghana Electricity Sector Support Project
This project supports Ghana's efforts to provide national access to electricity. It does so by financing the extension of the electricity distribution network, and by strengthening the managerial, commercial and technical capacities of main sector public actors. The project also promotes energy efficiency and the development of renewable energies.

Contexte |
Ghana is considered as one of the most stable countries in western Africa, characterized by a strong democratic rule of law and a relatively robust economic growth. To secure the country stability and support further growth, it is imperative for Ghana to address the weaknesses of the power sector, notably by increasing electricity generation capacity and reinforcing and extending the reach of the electricity distribution network. Cases in point are that today only about 62% of households nationwide have access to electricity, and urban growth is triggering a steep increase in electricity demand. |
Objectifs |
This is a continuation of SECO support to the electricity sector in Ghana which started in 2007. Through this project, SECO finances the extension of the electricity distribution grid under the service areas of the two electricity distribution companies: the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). The grid extension will be designed so as to maximise the number of people that will receive access to electricity through SECO funding. The strengthening of the institutional capacities of ECG, NEDCo, and the promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency are also objectives of the project. The expected impact of the project is economic development and poverty reduction in Ghana. |
Effets à moyen terme |
Improved operations and financial situation of ECG and NEDCo. Increased access to electricity. Larger utilisation of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies. |
