IRQ Oxfam – Integrated WASH and Protection response to conflict affected communities in Diyala governorate
A majority of people living in rural northern Diyala do not have access to potable water which results in communities utilizing unsafe sources like rivers and irrigation channels. The lack of solid waste management systems further aggravates the poor health conditions within this area. This project aims at reducing water and sanitation related risks and increasing access to clean water for IDPs, returnees and host communities living in the districts of Kifri and Khanaqin. It also helps particularly vulnerable families access protection services.

Contexte |
A majority of people living in rural northern Diyala do not have access to safe drinking water which results in the communities utilizing unsafe sources like rivers and irrigation channels, putting them at risk of health issues. Women and girls are the most adversely affected by these urgent hygiene needs. The lack of solid waste management systems aggravates the poor environmental and living conditions of the targeted area and further deteriorates the water quality. Protection needs are also high for men and women living in Diyala and most are unaware of available protection services. Families lack information about entitlements and available services in return areas which prevents them from taking an informed decision on whether to return or to remain. Due to the perceived lack of security in return areas, many of those displaced in Diyala are expected to remain in displacement for months to come. |

Groupes cibles | The project is expected to reach 10,000 households or a total of 60,000 individuals. Beneficiaries will include an equal number of women/men and adults/children. |

Coordination avec d'autres projets et acteurs | This contribution will complement the protection response supported by SDC in northern Diyala, including the deployment of a Swiss Humanitarian Aid expert to UNHCR Kalar, the incremental phasing-out of the partnership with SCI in Khanaqin, and the funding of two community-based organisations in Garmiyan through the SDC small-grants programme. |
