Ageing and Health in Bosnia and Herzegovina
In BiH, beyond modest pensions, no personal or social assistance is available for the elderly, who belong to the poorest population. The project supports the community engagement for the elderly and the introduction of home based care for the elderly in 10 municipalities. Home based care is provided by auxiliary nurses, trained and employed by the Red Cross of BiH in cooperation with local governments. The project is a contribution to the initiative of the Swiss Red Cross.

Contesto | The population of BiH is rapidly ageing. The elderly belong to the most vulnerable and poorest population. Adequate and affordable healthcare and assisted living for the elderly is missing. Everyday life is difficult for older persons and the quality of their life is low. Given the unemployment rate of over 20% and the lack of decent job opportunities, there is an opportunity for the opening of new jobs for much needed carers for the elderly. |
Obiettivi | Contribute to the increased health and well-being of elderly people in BiH. |
Gruppi target |
Project beneficiaries are primarily women and men older than 65. Over 11,000 persons will directly benefit from Phase 1. Over 1,500 elderly persons will receive home based care and over 1,000 of their family members will benefit from support. At least 150 auxiliary nurses will be trained and engaged in service provision. Around 2,000 elderly people will participate in creating age-friendly communities with their local governments. An additional 6,000 elderly will benefit from engagement in community groups. |
Effetti a medio termine |
1. Elderly and chronically ill people have access to home based care in at least 10 municipalities in BiH. 2. Elderly people actively engage and contribute to creating age-friendly local communities. 3. The Red Cross Society of BiH has developed capacities needed for becoming the leading service provider in ageing and health in BiH. |
Risultati |
Risultati principali attesi: Risultati fasi precedenti: The results of Swiss Red Cross support since 2013 are as follows: 214 auxiliary nurses were trained (77% female) based on accredited curricula. In five targeted municipalities, 38 auxiliary nurses, employed by the local Red Cross, and 38 volunteers conduct, 46,000 visits annually for 673 elderly persons (68% female) of which 40% are barely mobile or immobile. The costs of home care are shared among the municipalities, beneficiaries and donors (the latter gradually decreasing). In addition, 35 community groups for healthy ageing, with over 1,320 participants, have been established. They engage in initiatives and advocacy for improving the living conditions of elderly people. |
