Health System Strengthening Support Program 2017-2019

With its contribution to the health common fund (PROSAUDE) Switzerland supports the Government of Mozambique, in particular local governments, to accelerate equitable access to primary health services for women, children and people living in rural areas. As chair of the health common fund, Switzerland will advocate increased domestic funding and decentralization in order to foster sustainable and equitable health financing.

Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV)

To contest the increasing problem of drug resistance and to accelerate malaria elimination, new drugs against malaria are needed. The Geneva-based Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) drives the discovery, development and implementation of new antimalarial drugs. Working with pharmaceutical, academic and affected country partners, MMV reduces costs and ensures affordable and equitable access to quality medicines by vulnerable groups at risk of malaria, in particular children and pregnant women.

Contribution to the World Health Organisation (WHO)

The World Health Organisation is the directing and coordinating authority on international health within the United Nations system. WHO is a priority organisation for Switzerland’s development cooperation because its mandate is to ensure the highest attainable level of health and well-being for all. Its rights-based approach to health makes WHO a crucial partner for health equity and its normative function is a key source of strategic comparative advantage on the global health scene.

Central Asia : Water Accountability in Transboundary Chu and Talas River Basins

Effective water resources management requires data management capacities for proper decision-making at different scales. In this context, a modern, Multi-Level Distributed Water Information Systems is a management instrument that provides stakeholders’ gateways for judicious and sustainable water resources management. The project is aiming at introducing such a modern management information system in transboundary Chu and Talas river basins to improve water accountability and transparency.

Programme d’appui à la valorisation des produits forestiers non ligneux, phase 2 (PFNL2)

Au Burkina Faso, les produits forestiers non ligneux[1] (PFNL) constituent une importante source alimentaire pour les populations des zones affectées par les chocs climatiques et déficitaires sur le plan alimentaire. Les PFNL font partie de l’alimentation de plus de 43,4% des ménages ruraux et procurent de l’emploi et des revenus. Le programme  contribue à l’accroissement de la sécurité alimentaire, nutritionnelle et des revenus des ménages ruraux et périurbains[2] par la valorisation et la gestion durable des PFNL.



[1] Les PFNL s’entendent par « tout bien d’origine biologique autre que le bois et la faune à l’exception des insectes, dérivé des forêts et des arbres hors forêts, constitués de végétaux spontanés, domestiqués, et ceux destinés au reboisement ». (Source FAO)

[2] Le périurbain est un espace rural au sens où l’essentiel des sols est attribué à des activités agricoles; mais c’est aussi un espace urbain au sens où la majorité de la population active qui y habite travaille dans une ville, en effectuant des migrations alternantes. Le milieu périurbain connait une très forte compétition entre usage agricole et non agricole des ressources: terres, main-d'œuvre, etc. La production agricole est orientée principalement pour le marché du centre urbain.

Strengthening of Representative Bodies in Mongolia (SRB)

The project aims to make Mongolia’s sub-national local assemblies (khurals)[1] more responsive and accountable to citizens, ensuring youth participation and realising the rights of the poor and marginalised. A comprehensive capacity-development strategy will be implemented that addresses the legal and institutional environment, the organisational capacity of local councils and the competencies of locally elected politicians. Gender equality and pro-poor approaches are mainstreamed in the project’s design and in its results framework.

Educational facilities for the Internally Displaced and street children

The internally displaced youth living often as street children in the low-income neighbourhoods of the capital city Islamabad and are deprived from basic education and protection services. The Mashal school educates IDP children from all over the country with a majority from KP and FATA, offers them a protective space, advises / counsels them on cultural, social and legal issues and help them to register under the government system by that laying the basis for future livelihood possibilities.

Mainstreaming the Concept of Migration and Development into Strategies, Policies and Actions in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Diaspora for Development (D4D)

About 2 million BiH citizens reside outside their country of origin. They retain strong connections with their homeland, and many of them are interested in contributing to its development with skills, know-how and financial investment. Switzerland supports BiH (in both entities and Brčko district) in creating a favorable environment for leveraging diaspora’s human and financial capital (as investors, providers of know-how and networkers) for the development of the country, thus contributing to economic growth, employment and income.

Programme d’Appui à la Formation Professionnelle et à l’Apprentissage (PAFPA)

Au Burkina Faso, la majorité des jeunes travaille dans des activités à faible valeur ajoutée, du fait d’un système de formation professionnelle peu efficace et faiblement lié au secteur privé. Le PAFPA entend améliorer l’accès et la qualité de ce système en capitalisant sur les expériences de la DDC dans les secteurs agro-alimentaire et artisanal et en promouvant un partenariat public-privé inédit entre le Ministère de la formation professionnelle, la plus grande organisation patronale et une ONG spécialisée en ingénierie de formation.

Support Reforms and Good Governance in the Health System in Ukraine

SDC supports the ongoing health reform aiming at tackling the root causes of the poor health status of Ukrainian population. This project leverages and strengthens the impact of a World Bank loan which intends to improve the quality and efficiency of health care services in selected regions.
