Swiss Government Contribution to the ICRC Headquarters’ Appeal 2024 (Sitzbudget IKRK)

The ICRC is the most important partner of SDC in the humanitarian field. About one third of the SDC Humanitarian Aid budget is allocated to the ICRC. The core contribution of CHF 80 million reflects Switzerland’s interest for the ICRC to have strong and well-established headquarters in Geneva.

Humanitarian Quality Assurance Initiative (HQAI) 2024

Following an internal evaluation of three related organisations (HQAI, CHS Alliance, Sphere) it was decided to discontinue the support to HQAI and CHS Alliance and that a last phasing out support to HQAI would be provided for 2024 to enable it to work on its renewed business proposition in line with its upcoming 2024–2029 strategic plan and ensuring its financial continuity.
Burundi – Programme conjoint sur les droits humains

La situation des droits de l’homme au Burundi reste préoccupante en raison de la persistance des violations des droits de l’homme et de l'absence d'obligation de rendre des comptes. Le Programme conjoint sur les droits humains est une initiative multipartite (Gouvernement et bailleurs de fonds) qui vise à promouvoir l’application du cadre légal en matière de droits de l’homme par des institutions crédibles et efficaces.

Additional Allocation of SDC Funding (Sub-Saharan Africa Division) in 2024 to ICRC Operations in Sudan

SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence. In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises.

The war in Sudan entered its second year. Sudan is facing a major humanitarian catastrophe. The conflict also affected neighbouring countries, in particular Chad and South Sudan who are already struggling with a dire humanitarian situation that pre-existed before the conflict broke out. The consequences of the war exacerbated the acute food insecurity situation in those countries. With additional funding, SDC reinforces WFP’s emergency response to deliver life-saving food and nutrition assistance in Sudan, Chad and South Sudan.
Green Climate Fund Core Contribution 2024-2027

Designed as an operating entity of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s financial mechanism, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the largest multilateral climate fund financing exclusively climate mitigation and adaptation projects in developing countries. Switzerland advocates in the GCF governing board for high impact climate projects with maximum development cobenefits, social inclusion and conflict-sensitivity.
Technology acceleration program for sustainable development: SDC contribution to EPFL’s Tech4Dev program phase II and to ETH4D phase II, 2024 - 2027

EPFL’s and ETH’s community-centric technology programs encourage transdisciplinary North-South research including academics and practitioners to develop locally aware and innovative approaches that shall bring impactful solutions to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Transdisciplinary science and research are playing an essential role to implement the Agenda 2030. After successfully launching both initiatives in 2019, SDC continues to partner with both Swiss universities.

Switzerland’s objective is to support the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) with high-quality funding while advocating for new, more inclusive and forward-looking ways of working to enable an efficient and effective humanitarian response to people in need in accordance with humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law. OCHA is a priority organization for Switzerland.
Access 2 Green Financing for Enterprises

Building on Switzerland’s experience with innovative access to finance avenues, this programme facilitates mobilising green finance for small and medium sized enterprises in Bangladesh. The focus is on enterprises that have a strong commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and to providing green products and services in order to address climate change and reduce environmental degradation.

CAR, OCHA, Humanitarian Fund Central African Republic (HF-CAR) Protection and Assistance to people affected by conflict and violence

The protracted crisis continues to affect the lives and livelihoods of Central Africans, and more than 46% of the population remains in need of protection and assistance. The HF-CAR enables the implementation of priority humanitarian responses, and the Swiss contribution enables an effective and efficient response to these needs, in its commitments to Good Humanitarian Donorship, the Grand Bargain and the Localization of Aid.

The Central African protracted crisis (conflicts, violence, climatic and epidemiological shocks) persists and affects over 50% of the population. Coordinated by UNICEF with the support of UNOCHA, the RRM provides humanitarian monitoring and initiates emergency actions following a human or natural shock. Switzerland’s contribution makes it possible to respond effectively and efficiently to urgent humanitarian needs, in its commitment to Good Humanitarian Donorship.

Supporting Anticorruption and Asset Recovery through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the UNCAC Coalition

Switzerland has a fundamental interest in preventing corruption so that resources in partner countries flow in public services and sustainable development, and stolen assets are not deposited in Swiss financial institutions. Supporting the effective implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) including a multilateral dialogue platform on asset return will ultimately lead to increased resources for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
