Childhood Cancer Care in Latvia

Switzerland supports the Children’s Clinical University Hospital (CCUH) in Riga, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in October 2024. The hospital plays a key role in children’s healthcare in Latvia. A special event was the official launch of the Swiss-Latvian cooperation programme “Development of Childhood Cancer Care”. 



Knowledge Transfer and Collaboration: Croatian Water Experts Visit Switzerland

At the end of October 2024, SECO organized a study visit for Croatian water experts to explore Swiss approaches to drinking water and wastewater management. Visits to the wastewater treatment plants in Schwyz and Gossau-Grüningen, as well as the drinking water supplier tb Glarus, provided an impressive showcase of energy-efficient water management practices. 


Insight into Swiss energy management and renewable energies for the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy

At the end of May, SECO organized a study visit to Bern and Western Switzerland for Slovenian experts in the area of environment, energy and climate. Thanks to exchanges with the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, the canton of Vaud, and the municipality of Saint-Prex (VD), the delegation gained important insights into local energy networks, their digitalization, and new energy planning tools at all administrative levels. The visit to Agroscope and the Solberry berry farm also provided an opportunity to learn about existing Swiss agri-photovoltaic systems in a scientific and agricultural context and to establish important contacts for future cooperation.



Second Swiss contribution, migration framework credit: Implementation agreement with Italy signed

On 17 May in Rome, Switzerland and Italy signed an agreement on the implementation of projects under the second Swiss contribution to the migration framework credit. CHF 20 million has been earmarked to fund the accommodation and care of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in Italy. This is a further Swiss contribution to addressing migration in Europe. The agreement was signed by State Secretary Christine Schraner Burgener and the Italian head of cabinet of the Ministry of the Interior, Maria Teresa Sempreviva.


Swiss-Polish Research and Innovation Programme

State Secretary Martina Hirayama visits Poland with science delegation

On 9 and 10 April, Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation (ERI), met with Polish government representatives in Warsaw. She opened the kick-off event of the Polish-Swiss research and innovation programme. The visit to Warsaw will strengthen bilateral relations between Switzerland and Poland in the ERI sector.


The new Swiss-Polish Cooperation Programme has been launched

The Swiss-Polish Cooperation Programme as part of the Swiss Contribution to selected EU member states, was officially launched in Warsaw on 12 December 2023. Over 300 representatives from Polish towns, the research and innovation community, civil society and the private sector attended the event.

Swiss Expertise solicited in Czech winter-sports resorts

Within the scope of a small project that unfolded in the frame of the Czech-Swiss Partnership Fund, the national branch-association Swiss Cableways (SBS) and the Czech Association for Transportation by Rope Asociace Ianové dopravy (ALDR), exchanged their know-how in the domains of training and marketing. The project, endowed with a budget of CHF 40,000, took place from January to December 2012.


Official visit by Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs

On 21st March 2013, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), received his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkēvičs for an official working visit. In addition to bilateral relations, the talks in Bern covered the European policy of both countries, aspects of multilateral cooperation, and current international issues.


First Solar Collectors in Operation at Polish regional Hospital

Since December 2012, the regional hospital of the Suski district has been receiving its hot water thanks to solar energy. In fact, 123 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the hospital. In addition, by summer 2013, an additional 2349 solar panels on the roofs of private buildings will be put into operation.



Exchange of experiences with the Federal Audit Oversight Authority

Independent, high-quality audits discourage the falsification of corporate accounts and thus also help prevent balance sheet fraud and the economic instability that accompanies it. Switzerland therefore provides funding for a regional programme coordinated by the World Bank's Centre for Financial Reporting Reform to introduce more transparent accounting and auditing standards in several of the new EU member states. In the framework of this programme, a two day study visit to Switzerland took place in December 2012.



Partnership project in the domain of sports

The goal of the Partnership Fund is to support and expand institutional cooperation between Switzerland and the partner countries concerned. All told, over 150 small projects have been implemented in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. In the majority of cases, the focus is on projects in the environmental or social domains, but not always. For instance, a small project in the Czech Republic is fostering cooperation in the teaching of sport between an Aikido school in Langenthal and a gymnastics club.


Kick-off to the Swiss-Romanian Research Projects

On 29 August 2012, an information event was held in Bern on the Swiss-Romanian research projects being supported by the Swiss Enlargement Contribution for the benefit of Romania. The moment has now come to get underway with the implementation of the 26 projects selected. As a rule, they are to last for a three-year period and be terminated by 2015. Switzerland is supporting the programme with an amount of CHF 10 million.


Co-operation on research between Poland and Switzerland

In the framework of the Swiss-Polish Research Programme, two research teams from Bern are participating in projects on flood prevention and aspects of climate change. The Programme is financing a total of about 40 research projects which are being carried out by Swiss and Polish universities and research institutes. The programme has an overall budget of about CHF 30 million.


Promotion of community service work as an alternative to imprisonment in Romania

As part of its enlargement contribution to Romania, Switzerland supports Community Service Workshops as an alternative to imprisonment. This integrative and low-cost form of punishment is provided in four workshops. It provides Romanian judges with an alternative to short prison terms. The system is based on a model from Zürich that has been running successfully in Switzerland since 1998. Persons sentenced to short prison terms can keep their job and remain in their familiar environment. They do not need to be reintegrated into society because they do not go to prison at all. It also seems that the rate of recidivism is lower.


Message on Switzerland’s International Cooperation in 2013–2016

After the National Council, the Council of States adopted the Message on Switzerland’s International Cooperation in 2013–2016 on Tuesday, 11 September 2012. For the first time, the Message describes in one document the tasks of humanitarian aid, development cooperation, economic and trade policy measures within the framework of development cooperation, and cooperation with the countries of Eastern Europe.
