Surveys of protected species in Vas, Zala and Somogy

Project completed

When the Natura 2000 sites in the counties Vas, Zala and Somogy were designated, several species have not been surveyed at all or just incompletely. This project fills this gap by surveying 90 data-deficient species (amphibians, reptiles, bats, butterflies, dragonflies, xilophag insects). Based on this data, protection measures are proposed which will contribute to the conservation of the Natura 2000 sites.

Background The first country report on the implementation of Natura 2000 highlights that the conservation status of certain water-related and forest habitats / species is unfavorable or bad in Hungary. The report further states that several species of community interest are data deficient. When designating the Natura 2000 sites in the three counties Vas, Zala and Somogy, several species have not been surveyed at all or just incompletely. Data necessary to decide on the correct conservation measures is lacking.
Objectives

The conservation status of the Natura 2000 sites of the counties Vas, Zala and Somogy is improved in coherence with European and Hungarian regulations. For this purpose, newly drafted management suggestions lay a sound basis for an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable management of these Natura 2000 areas.

Target groups

Farmers, National Park Directorates, professional conservation organisations, green NGOs, research institutions, politicians, Ministry of Rural Development.

Activities

After elaboration of the survey methodology, zoological surveys on 90 data deficient species (amphibians, reptiles, bats, butterflies, dragonflies, xilophag insects) are carried out in 62 Natura 2000 areas on totally 204’000 hectares forest. On the basis of this data, management suggestions respectively plans for all 62 Natura 2000 sites in Vas, Zala and Somogy are elaborated, ensuring the protection of the habitats and species.

Results

Achieved results:

  • Protected animal species were surveyed in over 200'000 ha of "Natura 2000" territory
  • Data collected and plans for sustainable management supplied for 13 "Natura 2000" site
