Together with other high-ranking members of the international community, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, took part earlier today in a ceremony marking the signing of the peace accord between RENAMO and FRELIMO, the opposing sides in Mozambique's civil war. This peace accord was in large measure concluded thanks to Swiss support.





Switzerland and Mozambique discuss peace and sign an international cooperation agreement

The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, paid an official visit to Switzerland on Wednesday, 28 February; it is the first visit by a Mozambican head of state and government since 2009. President Alain Berset received President Nyusi with military honours at the Lohn country residence. The official talks focused on Switzerland’s good offices in the peace process in Mozambique, development cooperation and bilateral economic relations.

The president of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, and the leader of the main opposition party (RENAMO), Afonso Dhlakama, have asked Switzerland to chair the contact group that will accompany talks between the two parties to the conflict towards a peace accord in Mozambique. Switzerland accepted the role in accordance with its foreign policy strategy.

Some 50 million stockpiled anti-personnel mines and 2 million cluster munitions have been destroyed over the past 20 years. People are nevertheless still being killed by landmines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war on a daily basis despite international efforts in which Switzerland also plays an active role. The federal government has therefore laid down guidelines on its humanitarian demining engagement for the period 2016–19 and will continue to provide experts for UN demining programmes, support demining projects in the countries concerned and maintain its strategic partnership with the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining.
