Ambassador Urs Schmid meets the Swiss Business Community in Montenegro

On 26th November 2021, Ambassador Urs Schmid met with 20 representatives of the Swiss Business Community in Montenegro for the first ever “Business round table”. The event was held at the beautiful Lustica Bay in Tivat, one of the most significant Swiss investments in the country developed by the Swiss company Orascom Development Holding.

Within the regular activities of the Embassy of Switzerland in Serbia, the Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Urs Schmid, met with thirty representatives of the Swiss Business Community.

Objective of the gathering titled “Beyond COVID-19 – what’s next? How we can get out of the crisis and shape the way forward?” was to brief them about some of the most important activities of the Embassy since last year, to inform them about the latest developments in the bilateral economic relations between Switzerland and Serbia and to hear from them, how Swiss companies in Serbia have adapted to the circumstances caused by Covid-19 pandemic and how they assess the imminent future.



Another Swiss-Serbian success story: “roll-in” of the first Swiss high-speed train in Belgrade

Last Friday, the Swiss Ambassador attended the ceremony marking the arrival of the first Swiss high-speed train together with the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Minister of Transportation Tomislav Momirovic as well as Stadler Rail Chairman of the Board of Directors Peter Spuhler. The total of three Stadler high-speed trains will later connect the two Serbian cities of Belgrade and Novi Sad with the Hungarian capital Budapest. 


Eight new eServices promoted in Novi Pazar

The citizens of Novi Pazar will from now on have at their disposal eight new electronic services, developed by the City Administration with the support of the Government of Switzerland through the Swiss PRO Programme and in cooperation with the Office for Information Technology and eGovernment.


Dual education program begins in cooperation with Standard Furniture

Public and private sector representatives held a ceremony in Cuprija on 21.10.2021 to mark the beginning of the dual education program at Standard Furniture Serbia. On the initiative of the company and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia , the first group of nine students of wood processing (furniture manufacturing operators) was formed at the Technical School in Cuprija, for the school year 2021/2022.


10th Migration Dialogue between Switzerland and Serbia

Switzerland and Serbia signed a Migration partnership agreement in 2009. Ever since, regular Migration dialogues have been organized for the partner institutions in charge of migration management. From 19 to 20 October, a delegation from Serbia led by the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration met with the Swiss counterparts led by the State Secretariat for Migration. 


Swiss Ambassador and the Mayor of the City of Kragujevac sign a Cooperation Agreement within the Education to Employment (E2E) project

On 18 October 2021 Swiss Ambassador Urs Schmid met with Mayor of the City of Kragujevac Nikola Dasic to discuss issues regarding economic development and employment, especially concerning the labor market and its challenges. An agreement of cooperation was signed which envisages the support of the City of Kragujevac to the Swiss-Serbian E2E project on raising the employability of young people through the organization of work-based-learning training with employers from the City of Kragujevac territory. The agreement is a positive sign that trainings for young people are becoming sustainable permanent solutions and that companies and local self-governments are participating in it together.


Round tables "Let’s Meet - Refugees Our Neighbours" held in Pirot, Obrenovac and Kikinda

As an integral part of a project implemented by the Crisis Response and Policy Centre  (CRPC) in partnership with the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), three round tables entitled "Let's meet - Refugees our neighbors", were held in September and October 2021. Inclusion and integration of persons in mixed migration movement is one of the project objectives and accordingly panel discussions were organized in cities that accommodate reception centers - Pirot, Obrenovac and Kikinda.


Serbian human rights lawyer named regional UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award winner

Nikola Kovacevic, an independent human rights lawyer, who has tirelessly supported asylum-seekers and refugees, especially addressing the issues of access to territory and asylum procedure, as well as the practice of collective expulsions (pushbacks), has been named the 2021 Regional winner of the UN Refugee Agency’s Nansen Refugee Award in Europe. This is the first time a person from Serbia and Western Balkans is granted with the award established almost seven decades ago.
