The 2004 environment Agreement regulates Switzerland's participation in the European Environment Agency (EEA). The EEA collects and analyses environmental data in European countries.

The data are recorded according to the same binding criteria to ensure that they are comparable. To achieve these objectives the EEA has set up the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet). As a full member of the EEA, Switzerland participates without restriction in its activities and has direct access to all data and information that is collected and disseminated through Eionet.
