The heatwave in Greece continues unabated. With several parts of the country still battling raging wildfires, the Greek authorities have appealed for international assistance. With no improvement of the situation in sight, Switzerland has decided to send assistance in response to Greece's request.

On Saturday morning, three Super Puma army helicopters will take off for Athens, with a total crew of around 30 army personnel. The helicopters and crew will commence firefighting operations north of the capital on Sunday.

In addition, a Swiss Humanitarian Aid detachment has already set off for Greece this afternoon. The rapid response team, consisting of four members of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit and fire protection experts, will support the Swiss Armed Forces on the ground and ensure coordination with the Greek authorities.
