The EU adopted new measures against Russia on 16 December as part of its fifteenth package of sanctions in response to Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine and its destabilising actions undermining Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and security. The EAER has followed suit by expanding the list of sanctions under its jurisdiction.
Under the latest listings, 54 persons and 30 companies and organisations have now been sanctioned with a freeze on assets and a ban on providing funds and economic resources. The newly sanctioned persons, who are mostly members of the military, senior executives in companies in the energy sector, and individuals responsible for the deportation of children or the dissemination of propaganda and disinformation, are also subject to a ban on entering and transiting Switzerland. The 30 newly sanctioned companies and organisations are largely Russian defence contractors and shipping companies that transport Russian crude oil and petroleum products.
In addition, 52 ships have been banned from providing comprehensive services. These are mainly tankers that are part of Russia's shadow fleet and are circumventing the price cap on Russian crude oil and petroleum products or transporting military goods for Russia or stolen grain from Ukraine. In the commercial sector, 32 further entities have also been placed under stricter export controls.
The EAER has further adopted the individual financial sanctions that the EU has imposed on Belarus as part of its sanctions regime against the country due to the situation there. The measures concern 26 individuals and 2 organisations from Belarus who have been sanctioned with a freeze on assets and a ban on providing funds and economic resources. The newly sanctioned persons - mostly members of the judiciary, for example judges, and responsible for the suppression of civil society and the democratic opposition or the management of penal institutions where political prisoners are subjected to abuse - are additionally subject to travel restrictions.
Switzerland's list of sanctions in connection with Russia's military aggression against Ukraine and the situation in Belarus is fully in line with that of the EU.
