Dear visitors,

thank you for your interest in Switzerland and the Embassy of  Switzerland in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Welcome to our website!

The Embassy and its staff cover diplomatic, economic and cultural relations as well as development cooperation and humanitarian aid with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Switzerland recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent state in 1992. The Swiss Embassy in Sarajevo was established in 1995, while Bosnia and Herzegovina opened its Embassy in Switzerland already in 1993. Ever since, both countries are maintaining a wide variety of bilateral relations in many fields: Switzerland supported Bosnia and Herzegovina in its reconstruction efforts immediately after the war and is engaged in peace promotion, security and migration related activities. Important support is provided by the Swiss Army contingent in the EUFOR Mission.

Over the past 25 years, Switzerland has provided around 600 million Swiss francs throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina for concrete development projects to improve lives of people and support reforms. With Switzerland’s cooperation program, our team focuses on specific areas where reforms, innovation and systemic changes are critically needed. These priority areas are: democratic governance and municipal services; the health sector;
economic development and employment (especially youth employment); and migration and justice. In addition, Switzerland has made more than 1.5 million Swiss francs available to respond quickly to the pressing needs caused by COVID-19 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In our activities and projects, we share Swiss expertise and good practice and explore new areas of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Swiss support to Bosnia and Herzegovina is aligned with the country’s priorities and the EU pre-accession process.

Between 800 and 900 Swiss citizens live in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Embassy is the primary point of contact for their needs as well as for the ones of Swiss citizens travelling through the country. Our team was for example instrumental during the Covid-19 related repatriation of Swiss citizens back to their homeland. On the other hand, about 60’000 citizens with BiH roots live in Switzerland, and we are interested in keeping in close contact with them.

Let me assure you that Switzerland is keen to pursue its excellent relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is my personal goal during my mandate to
further intensify the already close ties between our two countries and peoples.

On our website, you will find more information about the Embassy’s activities, the cooperation between Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Switzerland in general. And don’t miss to follow us on Facebook and YouTube.
