On Autumnal Equinox - Raise your glass to wine of the future

What a better way to officially welcome autumn than having a glass of Swiss wine? The Ambassador of Switzerland to China, Bernardino Regazzoni and his wife Maria Cristina Regazzoni, invited guests to enjoy Swiss wine on the night of Autumnal Equinox to celebrate the season of harvest. The wines tasted are made from grape varieties developed by a renowned Swiss research institute. The grapes, which are immune to diseases, made world headlines and represented a breakthrough in viticulture.

Swiss President Ueli Maurer will pay a visit to China from 22 to 30 April accompanied by a finance and business delegation. Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited Mr Maurer for a state visit on 28 and 29 April. Following a Federal Council decision taken on 10 April, Switzerland and China will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation with third markets under the Belt and Road Initiative during the visit. In the days prior to that, Mr Maurer will hold meetings with the Chinese authorities and representatives from the financial and business sectors and attend the second Belt and Road Forum.

2nd edition of Sino-Swiss Architecture Dialogue kicks off; China premiere of Mario Botta documentary to further exchanges

The three-city dialogue, held from 10 to 14 April with the participation of the world’s renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta and film director Loretta Dalpozzo, consists of a rich program of documentary screening, lecture, master class, and panel discussion.

New VAT registration requirement for mail-order companies as of 1 January 2019

A taxable mail-order company provides domestic supplies by selling goods that it dispatches or transports from abroad to Switzerland. Anyone who achieves a turnover of at least CHF 100,000 per year from small consignments will imperatively be liable to VAT as of 1 January 2019 and must be entered in the VAT register if it is to be assumed that such deliveries will also be carried out in the twelve months from 1 January 2019.

Swiss Federal Council wants to further improve framework conditions for blockchain/DLT

During its meeting on 7 December 2018, the Federal Council adopted a report on the legal framework for blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) in the financial sector. The report shows that Switzerland's legal framework is well suited to dealing with new technologies, including blockchain. Nevertheless, there is still a need for selective adjustments. The Federal Council also noted the analysis of an interdepartmental working group on the money laundering and terrorist financing risks posed by crypto assets.

Universal and individual rights however are quite recent, with the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen issued in France in 1789 setting the stage for universal rights in modern history. The first truly comprehensive and global proclamation of human rights was established exactly 70 years ago with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
