The Swiss Ambassador presented his letter of credence to the President of Mongolia

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to China, Mongolia, and North Korea Jürg Burri presented his letter of credence to the President of Mongolia, Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, on 16 November 2023. The President congratulated Ambassador Burri on officially assuming his duties and wished him success.

Noting that the coming year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Switzerland, President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa stressed the importance of strengthening relations with high-level visits and bilateral cooperation between the two countries, highlighting cooperation in the economy, banking, finance, digital transition, climate change, energy, disaster management, and humanitarian aid. With over 200 million CHF in support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, numerous important projects and programmes have been implemented in Mongolia, making valuable contributions to the country’s social and economic development. The newly accredited Ambassador Burri expressed his readiness to actively work towards expanding relations and cooperation between the two countries. 

Ambassador Jürg Burri was born in 1965 in Thun, Switzerland. After graduating from the University of Bern with a licentiate in Contemporary History and Political Sciences, he briefly worked as a journalist before joining the Swiss Foreign Service in 1996. He completed his diplomatic training with positions in the United Nations Section at the headquarters in Bern and with the Swiss Mission to the United Nations in New York.

From 1998 to 2002, he was posted in the United Nations Section in Bern, working on preparations for Switzerland’s accession to the United Nations. Subsequently, he was appointed Science, Education and Space Counselor to the Mission of Switzerland to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, until 2006. From 2014 to 2018, he was the Director General of the Consular Directorate of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern. In 2018, he was appointed Ambassador of Switzerland in Poland, residing in Warsaw, where he served until 2022. Since September 2022, Jürg Burri has served as the Ambassador of Switzerland to the People’s Republic of China, Mongolia, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, with residence in Beijing.
