Mozambique Humanitarian Aid UNICEF WASH Preparedness 2023
Through UNICEF country program support, Switzerland contributes to integrated climate resilience, disaster risk reduction and preparedness in the WASH sector for communities at risk of cyclonic events. The program focuses on communities facing the triple risk of lacking access to WASH while being exposed to climate-related and health-related hazards. In addition, UNICEF program will respond to specific gaps in the emergency response at national and sub-national levels and prepare the WASH sector for a joint and systematic approach to climate change.

Background |
Mozambique is extremely prone to recurring hydrometeorological hazards and its population is at the same time highly vulnerable due to gaps in basic and social services, underlying poverty, and deprivations. The frequency of severe floods, droughts and tropical storms including cyclones has been increasing in Mozambique. The Global Climate Risk Index 2021 assesses impacts of extreme weather events (fatalities and economic losses) and ranks Mozambique as the 5th most affected country for the period of 2000-2019. |
Objectives | Mortality and morbidity are reduced through scaling up WASH emergency preparedness and response during natural disasters and/or in areas prone to water-borne diseases. |
Target groups |
Direct: 1,600 men, women through capacity building initiatives targeting policy makers, directors, managers within the relevant state institutions and humanitarian and development partners Indirect: 20,000 men, women and children through preparedness actions including prepositioning of water treatment supplies and emergency response |
Medium-term outcomes | The main objective of the contribution is to strengthen preparedness and response in natural disaster and/or water-related diseases prone areas of Mozambique through WASH in Emergency bottleneck analysis and capacity building, as well as procurement and prepositioning of WASH supplies. |
Results |
Expected results: Results from previous phases: The 2022-2023 contribution was mainly used to procure WASH emergency supplies to respond to multiple overlapping disasters (floods, cyclone Freddy and cholera) during the months of February and March 2023: |
