Discussion with H.E. Mr. Vadym Chernysh, Minister for the Temporary Occupied Territories and IDPs, and Prof. Walter Kaelin, former Representative of the UN Secretary-General, on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons.
In the framework of the Kyiv International Lectures Series, there is a unique opportunity to visit a public discussion with H.E. Mr. Vadym Chernysh, Minister for the Temporary Occupied Territories and IDPs, and Prof. Walter Kaelin, former Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons. Based on his longstanding experience, Prof. Kaelin will present his views on the situation of internally displaced persons in Ukraine, with a specific focus on experiences from other countries.
Walter Kaelin, Dr. iur. (Bern 1982), LL.M (Harvard Law School 1984), is professor emeritus of constitutional and international law at the University of Bern/Switzerland. He holds a honorary doctorate from the University of Basel. He has extensively worked on issues of international human rights law, refugee law and the law relating to the protection of internally displaced persons. His UN mandates include: Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iraqi occupied Kuwait (1991/92); member of the UN Human Rights Committee (2003 – 2008 and 2012 – 2014); and Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (2004 – 2010). From 2012 – 2015 he represented Switzerland and Norway as Envoy of the Chairmanship of the Nansen Initiative on cross-border displacement in the context of disasters and climate change.
This edition of the Kyiv International Lecture is organized by the Embassy Switzerland, in cooperation with the Sorbes Group. Ukrainian Week is the media partner, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv the academic partner of the Kyiv International Lectures Series.
