The Embassy covers Switzerland’s bilateral relations with Tanzania and represents the Swiss interests in the East African Community.

One of the main missions of the Embassy is to promote the bilateral relations with Tanzania. Switzerland and Tanzania have a long history of mutually fruitful collaboration, dating back nearly 100 years. Fully-fledged diplomatic relations between our two countries were established in 1964, when the United Republic of Tanzania was founded. In 1981, Tanzania became a priority country for official Swiss development assistance.

Over the decades, Switzerland and Tanzania have developed strong ties through political, cultural as well as economic and trade exchanges that have the potential to be even further strengthened. 

Through development cooperation, Switzerland has contributed to improving the lives of millions of Tanzanians. The current Swiss Cooperation Programme Tanzania 2021-2025 supports Tanzania’s process towards an equitable and stable middle-income country, and empowers young people to advance socially and economically, especially supporting impoverished women to contribute to regional stability and prosperity. Switzerland reinforces state institutions and local, national and international civil society organizations through three priority areas: strengthening state institutions, promoting civil space and improving youth livelihoods.
