UN agencies

The challenges we face today – such as humanitarian aid and the fight against poverty – have a global dimension. In this context the UN and its agencies have a central role. Switzerland is one of the United Nations' major donors and has been involved in the UN’s principal bodies since joining in 2002.

Since joining the UN in September 2002, Switzerland has been an active member, participating in the broad policy decision-making processes for the various UN agencies and for international development cooperation as a whole.

The UN is the only organisation where matters of global importance for development are discussed, in a forum bringing together all stakeholders. With its 193 member states, it enjoys a unique position of universality and legitimacy in the world. The UN plays a central role in establishing a regulatory framework for key development issues. Its neutrality, its expertise and its operational presence around the world contribute to its position of strength.
