Siccità, carenza di foraggio e conflitti per il controllo delle risorse naturali rendono grama la vita degli allevatori di bestiame nel Sud dell’Etiopia. Per migliorare la loro sicurezza alimentare e la capacità di resilienza in caso di crisi, la DSC ha adottato una serie di misure che vanno dal risanamento dei pascoli e dei pozzi all’introduzione di piani di utilizzazione e alla creazione di nuove fonti di reddito per le donne.

In Etiopia, un decimo della popolazione è costituito da comunità di allevatori di bestiame nomadi, il cui accesso ai servizi sanitari è quasi inesistente. Nel quadro del progetto Jigjiga University One Health Inititiave la DSC sostiene il potenziamento dell'assistenza sanitaria locale mediante un centro di competenza interdisciplinare all'Università di Jigjiga, nell'Est del Paese.

Building Regional and National capacities for improved Migration Governance in the IGAD Region

The Horn of Africa is of high interest for Switzerland in terms of migration policy. Swiss support to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its Member States will contribute to improve their migration governance capacities so as to enable the organisation to effectively implement regional, continental and global regulatory standards for the protection of refugees and vulnerable migrants in the region.
Horn of Africa: One Health Units for Humans, Environment, Animals and Livelihoods

The project aims at improving the well-being of targeted pastoral communities challenged with inadequate access to basic health/veterinary services and environmental conditions in Somalia, Ethiopia and Northern Kenya through integrated health service delivery for both pastoralists and their livestock. The project will contribute to stability and vulnerability’s reduction of citizens in the region, thereby reducing their displacement/migration which is in the interest of Switzerland and the international community.

SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence.

Ethiopia has about 2.1 million internally displaced people (IDPs) mainly due to conflict, drought and flood. Addressing the needs of IDPs has been limited to meeting their short-term humanitarian needs. Given the prolonged economic, social, and gender impacts of displacement on individuals, there is a critical need for longer-term solutions. Switzerland will contribute through IOM to address the long-term needs of the displaced and host communities in their search for self-sufficiency.

They involve confinement in camps with few opportunities to establish sustainable livelihoods. The Borena Zone (Oromia Region) hosts one third of Oromia's conflict Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) between Oromo and Somali groups. Water is a priority for conflict IDP sites and local populations. UNICEF, as the lead agency for the WASH sector in development and humanitarian settings, proposes targeted interventions to respond to immediate life-saving needs by improving access to clean and safe drinking water, and support the recovery phase for both IDPs and host communities.

Swiss support to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its Member States will contribute to improve their capacities to manage migration. Migrants and refugees will be better protected in the region and the contribution of migration to development of the Horn of Africa will be supported, hence stability promoted. The Swiss expertise and engagement at the policy level will contribute to foster a dialogue on migration between Switzerland and the Horn of Africa.
Reducing Food Losses through Improved Post Harvest Management in Ethiopia

Ethiopia continues to experience high post-harvest losses around 30% annually due to inappropriate use of technologies and mal-practices. Building up on the success stories and knowledge gained from SDC’s long-term engagement in post-harvest management and lessons learnt from the first phase, the second phase aims at promoting affordable and effective on-farm storage technologies and management practices to reduce post-harvest losses for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia.
