Switzerland calls on Singapore authorities to halt the execution of Malaysian national, Mr. Prabagaran Srivijayan, scheduled for 14 July 2017 and to commute his sentence. We have repeatedly called on Singaporean authorities to adopt a moratorium on all executions. Switzerland holds a strong and principled position against the death penalty and is opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. The death penalty is cruel and inhuman, and has not proven to be a deterrent to crime. Switzerland is therefore committed to continue working towards the abolition of the death penalty worldwide. The global trend is towards abolition and Switzerland encourages Singapore to join the growing community of nations which have abolished the death penalty.
