Provision of basic services in northern parts of South Sudan in response to the influx of civilian population fleeing the Sudan conflict
Switzerland supports ACTED’s operations in northern South Sudan (Renk, Aweil East and Manyo counties) to provide dignified shelter and essential services to civilians fleeing the conflict in Sudan. The intervention also includes targeted support to host communities, aiming to strengthen social cohesion in an increasingly fragile context.

Contesto |
Since 16 April 2023, South Sudan has received over 1,123,201 displaced individuals from Sudan, as of 23 April 2025 (IOM/UNHCR). Of these, 69% are South Sudanese returnees and 31% are refugees. More than 80% of the new arrivals have entered the country through Renk County. In 2024, SDC supported ACTED to respond to the crisis in this area through a one-off intervention. However, the continued influx and deteriorating humanitarian situation have necessitated a second phase of the response. The reception and transit sites infrastructure and capacities in Renk are overwhelmed. 58% of these new arrivals intend to remain close to the border, hoping to return to Sudan, further worsening congestion. Meanwhile, Majokyinthio in Aweil East, remains the second most trafficked point into South Sudan. During the first half of 2024, 50,000 arrivals were registered but this was a gross underestimation, (ACTED/REACH). A significant increase in border crossings, ranging 20-50 individuals/per/day were recorded, but on 25 February 2025 alone, 128 individuals (61 households) were recorded. Since 01 January 2025, with SDC support, ACTED provided emergency shelter, WASH, and basic protection services at the reception centre but there is need for the intervention to continue. |
Obiettivi | The intervention aims at providing crisis-affected communities in Upper Nile and Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG) with immediate relief, dignified living conditions and support during transit; whilst ensuring acceptance and social cohesion with host communities. |
Gruppi target |
An estimated 500,000 people are expected to flee Sudan’s armed conflict into South Sudan in 2025. This includes: |
Effetti a medio termine | The vulnerabilities of Sudan crisis affected populations in Renk, Joda, Manyo, and Aweil East are reduced and their living conditions in transit and areas of return are improved. |
