This is the third summit in a process launched by President Obama in Washington in 2010. The last summit was held in Seoul in 2012. The goal of this process is to strengthen nuclear security by taking measures to prevent nuclear material from falling into the hands of terrorists. In 2009 in Prague, President Obama called on the international community to secure all sensitive nuclear material within four years.
Since 2010, Switzerland has actively participated in this process. In particular, it supports the demand that nuclear security efforts should not only be focused on civilian nuclear materials but also on more sensitive nuclear materials for military purposes. It also emphasises the clear link between nuclear security and nuclear disarmament. Switzerland is also committed to more universal compliance with the existing regulatory nuclear security framework and to strengthening the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency as a coordination platform for various international initiatives.
On the margins of the meeting in The Hague, the President of the Swiss Confederation will hold talks about topics of current international importance, such as relations between Switzerland and the EU and the Chairmanship of the OSCE.
