Swiss public diplomacy in Russia

The opening of the new Embassy of Switzerland in Moscow was a great opportunity to increase Switzerland’s visibility in Russia. In the weeks before and after the opening, we intensified our efforts in communication and public diplomacy with the aim to promote a multifaceted image of Switzerland and to offer some insights into the work of an embassy. Although many of these efforts were concentrated in Moscow, we tried to reach out to the regions and developed some new formats. Increasing interaction with a young audience is one of the priorities of our Embassy.


Ignazio Cassis meets Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow

On 19 June 2019, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for the third time in nine months. At their working meeting, which took place in Moscow, bilateral relations, the Council of Europe and Ukraine were among the topics discussed. The previous evening, both had attended the inauguration of the new Swiss embassy in Moscow.


Grand Opening of the New Embassy of Switzerland in Moscow

From 18 to 20 June 2019, Switzerland will inaugurate its new embassy in Moscow, in the Chistye Prudy district in the heart of the Russian capital. The opening ceremony will take place on 18 June, followed by two days of gatherings with our partners. Switzerland now has a beautiful showcase in the heart of Moscow that will be a flagship of Swiss savoir-faire and design. The new embassy brings together under one roof all of the actors involved in promoting Switzerland's interests in Russia.


Professor Josef Zweimüller at the International Conference “Industrial Organization and Spatial Economics”

The 8th International Conference “Industrial Organization and Spatial Economics” was held on the 13th and 14th June 2019 at the Saint Petersburg Higher School of Economics (Высшая школа экономики). Among the guest lecturers who took part in this event was Prof. Josef Zweimüller from the University of Zurich, who gave a lecture on the topic “Parallel Trade, Price Setting and the Patterns of International Trade”.


Swiss-Russian Academic Roundtable

On April 17, the S&T Office of the Embassy of Switzerland supported the Russian University of Transport/RUT (Institute of International Transport Communications/IITC) in the organization of a roundtable with the purpose to promote Switzerland as the European transportation center and a highly innovative country in the area of logistics as well as to support the collaboration between the IITC and the University of Bern.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hold working meeting in Geneva

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, and his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, discussed bilateral, multilateral and global issues during a working lunch in Geneva. This was the first extensive bilateral meeting between the two foreign ministers, who until now had only met on the margins of conferences.


8th Suvorov Prize Award Ceremony

On October 22, 2018 for the 8th time, the Swiss-Russian Forum Foundation awarded the Suvorov Prize to the best Swiss-Russian innovative projects of 2018. The prize is given to Swiss and Russian entrepreneurial researchers whose projects submitted to the jury should meet the four basic criteria:  scientific merit, social aspect, marketability and contribution to fostering collaboration between Switzerland and Russia. A special attention is always given to young researches.


Visite of State Secretary Mr. Mauro Dell'Ambrogio in St. Petersburg

On May 16-18, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation Mauro Dell’Ambrogio visited St. Petersburg, the cradle of the Russian science – the Russian Academy of Sciences was established there in 1724 by the order of Peter the Great. The State Secretary’s program included participation in the 18-th International Likhachyov Scientific Readings and university visits.




Swiss-Russian relations: Didier Burkhalter and Sergey Lavrov to meet on Monday in Moscow

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, will visit Moscow on Monday for a working visit during which he will hold talks with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov. The talks will include bilateral relations between Switzerland and Russia and will give the two ministers the opportunity to exchange views on a number of major current international issues.


Switzerland steps up support for OSCE monitoring mission and further de-escalation measures in Ukraine

In his opening speech to the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, President Didier Burkhalter, called for efforts to improve implementation of the de-escalation measures in Ukraine and to step up support for the OSCE special monitoring mission and the Trilateral Contact Group. Switzerland has earmarked an additional CHF 2 million to support efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
