UNFPA Core Contribution 2025
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) works to address questions related to population and development, with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and youth. UNFPA is the only multilateral organization, which is engaged on a normative and operational level in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as gender equality and women’s
empowerment. It is therefore a key partner for Switzerland to ensure progress on these joint priorities.

Área de competencias |
UNFPA’s mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. Its focus is on sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal mortality, gender equality and women’s empowerment, youth, and population dynamics (growth rates, age structure, fertility, mortality and migration). UNFPA is the lead organisation for the implementation of the Programme of Action (PoA) adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994. UNFPA contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular goal 3 on health and goal 5 on gender equality. UNFPA leads the GBV Area of responsibility under the Global protection cluster. |
Prioridades estratégicas de Suiza y de la organización |
The Strategy for International Cooperation 2025-2028 includes UNFPA as one of Switzerland’s priority multilateral development organisations. UNFPA works to promote and achieve sexual and reproductive health and gender equality. Switzerland's cooperation with UNFPA is also included in its Health Foreign Policy 19-28. UNFPA’s work is derived directly from the Programme of Action of the ICPD, to which Switzerland committed itself in 1994. UNFPA is a key actor in the achievement of the SDGs, in particular goals 3 (health) and 5 (gender equality). To support UNFPA, Switzerland leverages its own thematic expertise and geographic network. As one of the top 10 donors, Switzerland has significant influence on UNFPAs programmatic orientation, oversight and accountability. |
Resultados del compromiso de la organización hasta la fecha | UNFPA operates in a difficult and very polarized political context, which restricts its operations in several countries. After two years of implementation of its Strategic Plan (SP) 22-25, UNFPA reports immediate results in the programme countries: With the prevention of 31.2 million unintended pregnancies, 9.5 million unsafe abortions and 64’730 maternal deaths averted. In addition. UNFPA ensured 2.4 million safe deliveries in humanitarian affected countries. UNFPA further enhanced its organisational effectiveness (i.a. data production and use, partnerships at national level and result-based management). |
