Support to more effective Mine Action and Strengthening of National Mine Action Capacities in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has left behind a grim legacy of mines and other explosive remnants. This leftover has a negative impact on the quality of life of the affected population and hampers the development. With this project, Switzerland will contribute to improving the quality of life of the population in areas affected by mines and other explosive remnants of war by speeding up and supporting more effective mine action activities in BiH and thus creating preconditions for socio-economic development in the country.

- Outcome 1: Land release activities: The population has safe access to land cleared of mines and cluster munitions and is given a perspective for socio-economic development.
- Outcome 2: Strengthening of national capacities: The BiH mine action authorities have additional resources and know-how to implement more efficiently and effectively their international mine action obligations.

Hintergrund |
BiH remains heavily contaminated with landmines and ERW and still belongs to the most landmine-affected countries in the world. The estimated size of suspected areas contaminated by mines is 1.177 km2 or 2,3% of the total land surface area and there are still some 120‘000 mines in the ground throughout BiH. Mine contamination jeopardizes safe usage of basic resources such as agricultural land, forests, woods, etc. Mines also block access to key public services (education, and healthcare) and pose a constant threat for people living near mine fields, affecting, together with the cluster munitions, lives of 650’000 people. BiH ratified the Mine Ban Treaty in 1998 and is required to destroy all antipersonnel mines not later than 1st March 2019, but is highly unlikely to complete this goal, the progress in demining remaining relatively slow (due notably to lack of financial resources and previous lack of engagement of the natiojnal authorities). Significant external support is needed to sustain and speed up mine action activities thus enabling land release for productive use by the affected population. |
Ziele |
The overall goal of the project is to contribute to improving the quality of life of the population in areas affected by mines, cluster munition and other explosive remnants of war by supporting more effective mine action activities in BiH and thus creating preconditions for socio-economic development. |
Zielgruppen |
The ultimate project beneficiaries are people living in communities affected by mines and/or other ERW, including vulnerable groups (such as returnees). At the institutional level, the primary target group is the Demining Battalion of the Armed Forces of BiH and the Civil Protection units from both entities, whose mine action capacities will be enhanced. At the policy level, the main beneficiary is the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MoCA), as the project clearly supports the implementation of the BiH Mine Action Strategy (the principal responsibility for continuous and efficient mine action implementation lying by the MoCA). |
