Hintergrund During the first quarter of 2023, the UN-OCHA Humanitarian Response Plan 2022 - 2023 for Venezuela has reached some 892’000 people. This figure is considerably below the envisaged target of 5.2 million people by the end of 2023. At national level, the needs gaps have increased and both states (Bolívar and Sucre) selected to the intervention are among the five most vulnerable regional entities in the country. According to the latest needs study conducted by RET, in the state of Bolivar it was found that more than 60% of families do not have continuous access to water. In the health sector, this state reported almost 80% of malaria cases nationally in the first quarter of 2022 and, a 93% decrease in the health care capacity due to the closure of health services and a shortage of medicines for the treatment of non-transmissible diseases. In the nutrition sector, the figures remain alarming, as it is forecast that one of three children born in these communities will live in precarious conditions, affecting their physical and mental development. In Sucre state, some communities have continuous access to water, but it is not safe, which has steadily increased the prevalence of water-borne diseases. In the health sector, there is a high deficit of trained personnel to provide emergency services and health care in health care centres. In relation to nutrition, the nutritional status of children under 5 years of age is alarming, with 36 out of every 100 children showing some level of malnutrition, with 32% being underweight and almost 10% showing an acute weight deficit.
Ziele Address the basic needs of vulnerable families in the states of Bolivar and Sucre through family and community strengthening in the sectors of Food Security and Livelihoods, Health and Nutrition, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
