A conference on the prevention of torture organised by the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship is taking place in Vienna. Representatives of the 57 OSCE participating States, the UN, the Council of Europe and civil society have been invited to participate. The conference focuses on cooperation between states, international organisations and civil society to respond to the current situation in the OSCE area. The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez, is the keynote speaker, accompanied by representatives of the Council of Europe and other national and civil society stakeholders.
Under the motto of «creating a security community for the benefit of everyone», Switzerland decided to place torture prevention on the OSCE's agenda for 2014, the year of its Chairmanship.
